Chihuahua Information
Appearance & physique
The Chihuahua is the world's smallest dog.
They can live up to 18 years when well cared for.
Chihuahuas are small, dainty, compact and robust, fine boned yet quite muscular. They weigh up to 2.7kg, with 1.8kg to 2.7kg preferred.
Coat & colour
Chihuahuas have a smooth coat or a long coat.
The smooth coat is soft, smooth, close and glossy.
The long coat is soft, being flat or slightly wavy.
They can be any solid colour, marked or splashed but never merle (dapple).
Character & personality
Every chihuahua has their own unique personality.
They are graceful, alert, spirited, intelligent, bold and fearless, and can be highly protective, yet gentle, loving and sweet tempered. They are a very loyal and devoted dog and can become quite attached to one person, making them an excellent companion.
Training
In terms of training, chihuahuas thrive on positive reinforcement, patience and most of all consistency, and are easily toilet trained - I prefer to take them outside at the appropriate times - for example on waking, after meals and after play times. Starting at a very young age, place them outside on the lawn or chosen area and repeat whichever command you choose. As soon as the puppy does the deed, positive reinforcement and praise are very important. This technique I find works best for effective toilet training.
Socialization
Puppy socialization at a young age is extremely crucial for chihuahuas, to raise a balanced, confident and happy little dog. Socialization with other dogs as well as people, especially young children is a must. Introducing your puppy to many different situations will be essential. Chihuahuas are suspicious of strangers, and so make great watch dogs.
Exercise
Although Chihuahuas do love a walk, they don't need much exercise, having bursts of energy which are fulfilled by pattering around the house after their owner! or simply playing with toys is quite ample.
The ''chihuahua shake''! - shivering is a very common trait in the chihuahua breed. They shiver when they are nervous, anxious, frightened, cold, happy or excited. Chihuahuas do not tolerate cold climates and should be protected from the weather when outside.
As you get to know your new puppy, the bond between you will grow as his/her unique personality and character emerge. Happy days!
